In 2018, with the passage of the Farm Bill in the United States, CBD hemp products became legal. But the status and regulation of CBD products is still fuzzy. The Drug Enforcement Administration still classifies CBD as illegal, and that makes FDA regulations for potency labeling unclear. The result of this fuzzy regulation: CBD potency claims and misleading labels on products. They’re everywhere you turn: “99.9% Potent CBD” and “PURE CBD.”

This is a dangerous situation for CBD consumers, as it’s impossible to tell which claims are accurate, trustworthy, and safe.

But where the government and newer CBD companies are unclear, we see an opportunity to be transparent and honest. At Optima, we value trust. We’d like to take a close look at our process and make clear what we do differently from other companies.

Measuring Quality

The quality of any product is measured against set expectations. Producers examine how often their product meets those expectations, and how close the product comes each time. At Oprima, we study the quality of our products across multiple measures.

We always want to make sure our customers understand how potent our products are, and accuracy is of the utmost importance. We determine the potency of CBDusing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). First, HPLC separates cannabinoid compounds. Then, the device establishes the source of the compounds and the percentage in the sample.

Variability to Watch

There will always be variability in sample testing. But some of our CBD competitors find that their results fluctuate wildly. This kind of extreme variability tends to result from poor methods and analytics, inconsistent instruments, and bad reference standards. These errors can result in up to ±5% variability. So when a competitor says their CBD is 99.99% potent, each individual product might in fact be between 94.99% and 104.99% potent. That kind of inconsistency could really alter the dosage.

At Oprima, we do everything we can to make our testing as consistent as possible. The analytical testing methods we use at Oprima are highly sensitive, and validated beyond FDA and USP standards. Our variability is very minimal at ±2%.

A potency of +99% may now be the industry standard for sales and labeling, but through thorough testing and understanding of our products, Oprima has found our reliable potency to be +98%, with only ±2% margin of variability. The potency number may look a little lower than some of our competitors, but it’s a number you can trust. This is a potency that’s reliable.

Setting the Standard

You might wonder how we know our testing is so trustworthy. The short answer is that Oprima is a pioneer in reliable testing. Our lab technicians are veterans of testing and pharmaceuticals, and they’re leading the pack of the CBD industry. They compare the potency of each sample to a recognized standard using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Before producing any sample data, we establish system suitability for each HPLC run to check each instrument and make sure it’s functioning at our standards. This is how pharmaceutical testing runs, and it should also be standard in the CBD industry.

Lab Analytics for Our Products

There’s one more thing we at Oprima do differently. Not only do we test each of our CBD products in house, but we also use two third party labs to make sure our results are accurate and trustworthy. After we conduct our own tests, Medicine Creek Analytics and Integrity Labs check our work. If a product doesn’t pass our tests--and their tests--it won’t find its way to you.
